The Benefits of Chiropractic and Massage

There are certain things in life that just go together without much thought. Peanut butter and jelly, popcorn and a movie, or Sonny and Cher (yes, I am dating myself).

Chiropractic adjustments and massage therapy are other examples of a match made in heaven.

One of the hardest things to do as a chiropractor near you is adjusting someone’s spine while all the surrounding muscles are tight and like beef jerky

Often times if those muscles are tense, it increases the likelihood of post-treatment soreness that lasts a day or so. For better adjustments and potentially less post-treatment soreness, I recommend for many of my patients a massage prior to Chiropractic treatment.

As Chiropractors, we are highly skilled and trained to move bones of the spine and extremities, but the majority of our education is not on muscle/soft tissue release. Trigger points and muscle knots take years to form, sometimes due to decades of faulty muscle contraction and firing due to injuries, poor posture, and stress. A skilled massage therapist knows it will take time and several sessions to start breaking down all that soft tissue to help reduce pain and tension.

Chiropractors, in most cases, do not have the time to massage and strip away years of tension and then adjust; thus, we rely on therapists to aid in a patient’s healing. Patients get the best of both worlds when they combine the two treatments.

I also note that after massage therapy near you, a person’s adjustment will last longer, and they won’t need to come back for as many repeat sessions. Muscles rule the roost when it comes to spine care-I can give the best adjustment in the world, but if patients don’t address all the muscles and knots, progress is not achieved.
